Happy fish.
My prototype was made in order to get people even think about happiness through the prism of food they consume everyday. It’s common to count fats, carbs and protein. It’s common to count calories. What if we could count also energy – both positive or negative?
The concept of prototype focused on the feelings of fish you bought on the market and going to cook for the dinner tonight. Have you ever thought it is actually a happy fish? Have you ever thought about killing it and cooking it with little injection or even with some respect?
My participants were asked to spin the wheel and choose “the normal” way of killing and cooking the fish, or the way of doing that “with respect”. The second one was going to make an action of consumption the fish more pleasant. And make the person at the end happier as he or she consumed some positive energy from happy fish.
In order to make the participants understand better the difference between those feelings – after choosing the way of killing the fish, they were supposed to listen to the music – Stravinsky in first case and “Wonderful life” by Hurts in the second.
I got different feedbacks from the people who tried my prototype. I need to mention that no body got the “killing with respect” option and they all had to listen disgusting sounds by Igor Stravinsky.
So here are the comments that I got.
- Do you want me to be vegetarian?
- I will think about it. I always try not to waste food, but don’t think about it’s feelings to be honest,
- When I eat fish i feel satisfied but fish not in any case,
- I feel nervous. Music make me feel scary. But I think you can not be happier from food,
- It’s really loud!

“Never give up. It’s such a wonderful life”.
I saw yesterday fish in the market. Happy one. It jumped out of it’s aquarium and “run away”. I like to think it’d tried to escape. It had hope for better future. As I said that fish was happy. Because if not, it would not act like this. It would stay in the water and it would wait until it’s very end.
I think this courage and resilience should be noticed and applied to human beings. Because there is something in common.
The human mind is constantly building mental representations of the future. Our belief about what’s coming next is what determines how happy we feel.
When someone becomes clinically depressed, they can lose interest in life. At the extremes of clinical depression, a person may stay in bed all day. Obviously, this does not make them feel better.
Why does that happen? Why do depressed people lose energy and motivation? It’s because depression gradually changes a person’s expectation about the future.
What’s the opposite of that?
People’s energy and happiness go up when we anticipate pleasure. When we hope.
